I have heard that there is a Non-stimulant medication used to treat
ADHD. Can you tell me what it is?
Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a non-stimulant drug that is administered to children when the
stimulant medications do not work or cause disturbing side effects. Atomoxetine
is taken once or twice a day and the side effects include nausea and
sleepiness. It can also reduce appetite. Rarely the medication may cause
yellowish discoloration of skin and eyes, pale stools and dark
urine. If these symptoms occur, the medication must be discontinued and one
should seek immediate medical assistance. There is concern that atomoxetine may
cause depression and suicidal
ideation and so all parents should be aware of signs of depression. This
medication is also expensive.
Other non-conventional medications used to treat ADHD include anti
depressants and clonidine. These drugs are last options and used when the above
medications do not work.
