Diagnosis of kidney stone

How is a kidney stone diagnosed?

When a kidney stone is suspected, the blood work may reveal high levels of uric acid or calcium.  Urine is often collected and may show blood or presence of certain minerals. However the best test to confirm presence of a kidney stone today is a CT scan. In the old days, an intervenous pyelogram was used. This test is rarely used today except in Canada, where access to a CT scan requires permission from the prime minister or the CEO of the hospital. Even if permission is granted for a CT scan, it often takes months to get the procedure.
