Humifier for nasal congestion

Should I buy a humidifier to relieve my constant nasal congestion?

There is no doubt that humidifiers can help relieve the congestion. However more evidence is accumulating that humidifiers overall may not be great devices for the home. The constant humidity in the air can allow for mold growth on carpets or in damp areas of the home. This may make asthma or allergic rhinitis much worse in children.

So before you rush off and order a humidifier, talk to your health care provider. In most cases adjusting the home furnace and decreasing use of AC can relieve symptoms.  The vendors of humidifiers have gone overboard and are now trying to convince every family to buy a humidifier. Humidifiers can vary in cost from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. In many cases these devices quickly become a redundant piece of equipment which should never have been bought in the first place.

If you decide to buy a humidifier, talk to people who have one. If you do buy one, get one from a medical supplier rather than a pharmacy. You will save a lot of money.
