Ankle sprain diagnosis

How is the diagnosis of an ankle sprain made?
Diagnosis of ankle sprain requires a physical exam. X-rays are only ordered to rule out a fracture. Many doctors order an MRI but this is a complete waste of money and does not change treatment in the majority of people. MRI is only useful when the pain is long term and you are unable to ambulate. In many cases, doctors first look at how well you are dressed and your insurance plan-that in most cases determines if you are going to get an MRI.
