Smoking and wrinkles

Can smoking cause wrinkles?

Most definitely. The majority of individuals who smoke look a lot older by the time they are in the 3rd decade of life. Smoking adds years to your skin. The chemicals found in tobacco can increase wrinkles, lines and makes your skin texture very rough.

Nicotine has been shown to destroy the elastin in the tissues and wrinkles are one of the first signs of premature aging in smokers. Nicotine also affects blood flow to the tissues and the skin will appear patchy, dark, pigmented and look dull. The greater the number of cigarettes you smoke and longer the duration, the faster the aging process.

Moreover, the lines and wrinkles caused by smoking are impossible to reverse. Even Botox does not make any appreciable difference. There is no cosmetic surgical procedure that can alter or erase wrinkles caused by smoking.

Smoking also affects skin on other parts of the body. The only way to treat premature aging from smoking is to quit tobacco.

Smokers who are exposed to sun develop wrinkles faster than anyone else. So if you want to look young and pretty for a long time, the first thing you should do is quit smoking.
